Fussy Family, with Bokke fever in the air we are all embracing our Proudly South African roots & nothing goes better with a rugby than a good braai! South Africa’s braai scene is nothing short of epic, a lively celebration of mouthwatering grills and good vibes.
Meaty dishes are the traditional stars of the show, but the rise of plant-based living has turned up the heat on a new evolution. Going vegan doesn’t mean waving goodbye to braai fun. In fact, it’s a chance to explore a whole new world of explosive flavors and creativity that’s not just good for you but great for the planet. So, let’s fire up the grill and discover how to rock a South African vegan braai like a boss.
Let’s prep your Vegan Braai to watch South Africas Rugby World Cup match this weekend!
Here are our top tips for making your Vegan Braai incredible:
The Heart of the Braai: Plant-Based Proteins: To kick off your vegan braai, focus on a variety
of plant-based proteins. Head on over to our Greenside & Blairgowrie stores to stock up on
the delicious range of seitan products from Herbi-vohr & pea protein tenders from on the Greenside- we highly recommend pairing their spare ribs with a side of our TFV coleslaw!
The Sizzle of the Grill: Grilled Veggies Galore: Elevate your braai experience with a colorful
array of grilled vegetables. Bell peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, and corn on the cob take on a
smoky, delicious flavor when cooked on an open flame. Brush them with olive oil, garlic, and
herbs for an extra burst of taste.
The Essential Marinades: Infusing Flavor into Your Vegan Braai: Create tantalizing marinades
using a mix of garlic, lemon, peri-peri sauce, and aromatic herbs. Let your plant-based
proteins soak in these flavors for a few hours before putting them on the braai.
Braai Breads and Sides: No braai is complete without a variety of sides and bread. Prepare
vegan-friendly garlic bread, sweet potato wedges to complement the smoky richness of your
grilled delights. Order your favourite TFV Salad Bowls & Sides to add that extra special kick to
your Braai!
Make a simple garlic bread to add a flavour punch to your
braai line-up!
What you need:
*1x store bought or homemade French loaf
*Flora vegan or oil of your choice
*Garlic
*Herbs of your choice
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 190°C
Prepare the Bread: Cut slices across the top of the loaf – careful to not cut all the way through, place the bread on a baking sheet
Make the Garlic Butter: In a bowl, combine the softened butter/oil, minced garlic, chopped herbs and a pinch of salt. Mix the ingredients until well combined, you can adjust the amount of garlic and salt to suit your taste.
Spread the Garlic Butter: Using a butter knife or a spoon, generously spread the garlic butter
mixture over the cut slices of the bread. Make sure to coat the surface evenly.
Bake in the Oven: Place the prepared bread in the preheated oven. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown, and the butter has melted into the bread.
Slice and Serve: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a minute or two. Slice the bread into individual servings and serve warm.
Variations: Experiment with different bread types, such as ciabatta or sourdough, for unique flavors and textures.
Herb Infusion: Add other herbs like oregano, thyme, or rosemary to the garlic butter for extra aromatic goodness.
Spicy Kick: If you like a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the
garlic butter.
